The fresh grassy fragrance of the Igusa can be strong for the first 6 months but it will eventually tone down when you become used to the Tatami fragrance. The fragrance of the Tatami is a very important part to the Japanese as it is akin to that of forest therapy and has plenty of benefits for the mind and body.

Tatami has a history of 2000 years in Japanese culture and lifestyle. Tatami originated in Japan, and it is a type of woven mat traditionally used by Japanese Royals, Samurais, and Japanese Officials as beds, floorings and chairs. The Japanese believe that Tatami has a natural connection to the individual’s wellbeing. Some benefits include the distinctive grassy fragrance of the Igusa, relaxing your mind and body, and being able to cool your body down during hot and humid temperatures and vice versa.

We do not chemically dye our Tatami. To get the dark weaving on our Tatami, the Igusa is dyed in vegetable dye that has no chemicals.

In Japan, the Tatami traditionally acts as a flooring in their rooms where their daily day activities take place. When it is night time, they would take out their Shikibuton (Futon) as their mattress for night sleeping and fold it back up in the morning for their daily day activities.

Tatami loves body contact as it helps to season the Tatami. As with all products, wear and tear can be expected after many years of usage. However, if you regularly maintain your Tatami with our Tatami Mist and show it some tender loving care, your Tatami can go a long way with you.

We advise our clients not to drag any sharp or pointed objects on them. Tatami loves body contact and it should be used regularly and not be kept away without ventilation for a long time as it is a natural product after all. We also urge our clients to clean their Tatami once a week to allow their Tatami to go a long way with you. Our Tatami can be maintained in three easy steps. Our Tatami has been specially innovated for hot & humid climates for the prevention of mould. We also have our specially formulated Tatami Mist to give our Tatami an additional layer of protection.Tatami only gets mouldy if you do not use it often and leave it in a dark place for too long without any sunlight & ventilation. For this reason, we recommend our clients to use their Tatami often, to have it ventilated and to use our Tatami Mist to prevent such incidents from occurring. If you do find mould on your Tatami, please dry the Tatami for 2 to 3 hours in a well-ventilated space. Our Tatami products do not breed insects unless you create conditions for insects to come onto it. Insects cannot live in places where there is no food and some of their food sources are food crumbs, dead skin cells, dandruff, dust, dirt and mould. When cleaning of Tatami products is not done, insects from external sources will be attracted to their food source on your Tatami. As they start feeding on the dirt on your Tatami, it may seem like there are insects growing on the Tatami, however, it is the food source on your Tatami that has attracted them. External pests and foreign infestations in your home may also be attracted to your Tatami. For these reasons, we advise our clients to not store their Tatami away for a long time without any ventilation, to remove their Tatami from areas of the house with foreign infestations and to regularly vacuum and wipe their Tatami with our Tatami Mist.
