Client Brief
Why They Chose Tatami
The decision was deeply rooted in family history. Zong Yi was referred to us by his mother-in-law, a dedicated, long-time Tatami user who understood the long-term health and comfort benefits of Igusa. For our client, the choice wasn't just about furniture; it was about adopting a lifestyle that had already been "vetted" by a trusted family member.
Key Challenges & Needs
The bedroom needed to transition from a sleeping area to a space where the family and children could sit and interact comfortably on the floor.
Traditional bed frames often present height risks for active children. Our client needed a low-profile solution.
The requirement was for a platform that could accommodate specific dimensions to ensure a seamless, wall-to-wall fit for the family’s needs.

Tatami Mat
Our Approach
Carefully selected Tatami products that perfectly match the project requirements
Design Strategy
The strategy centered on "The Elevated Floor" concept. By installing custom-fitted Tatami Mats, we effectively lowered the center of gravity in the room. This makes the space feel larger and more inviting for children. The key here was ensuring the mats were tight and secure. If you're going to have kids running and sitting on them, the fit has to be perfect, or the whole "platform" feel is lost.
Collaboration
Because our client came to us with a clear understanding of Tatami, the collaboration was very straightforward. We spent most of our time discussing the layout of the platform to ensure it supported both sleeping and "family sitting." We focused on the tactile quality of the Igusa, ensuring the finish would be soft enough for children’s skin but durable enough for daily use.
Cultural Inspiration
The project draws on the Japanese concept of Washitsu, where a single room serves multiple purposes throughout the day. By choosing Tatami, our client isn't just buying flooring; he’s embracing the cultural practice of floor-based living. It’s a bit of a shift from Western norms, but it prioritizes the family's physical proximity and a shared environment, something her mother-in-law clearly valued and wanted to pass down.
Layout Plan
Thoughtfully designed floor plan maximizing space efficiency and functionality

Living Room Platform
The core of the room is now a wide, custom-fitted tatami area. It eliminates the need for separate chairs or play mats, creating a singular, cohesive zone for the children to play and the family to rest together.
Bedroom Bay Windows
By utilizing the platform for "family sitting," the room remains uncluttered. The height of the platform is optimized to be easily accessible for children while providing a distinct, comfortable boundary from the rest of the home’s hardwood or tiled surfaces.
