Why They Chose Tatami
Alvin found Tatami Shop through a Google search, while actively looking for a floor-sleeping solution that could address his persistent back issues. More than just a sleeping surface, Alvin wanted a multifunctional tatami space where he and his family could genuinely unwind and relax together.
Key Challenges & Needs
Persistent back pain and poor-quality sleep had become a daily reality for Alvin, prompting him to seek an alternative to conventional mattresses.
He had recently moved into a new home and wanted to set it up with a sleeping arrangement that would actively support his recovery and long-term back health.
The space needed to go beyond just sleeping, a room where family members could also gather, lounge, and relax in a comfortable, natural environment.

Products of Choice
Tatami Mat
Our Approach
Based on Alvin's needs and preferences, we identified tatami mats as the ideal solution, a traditional Japanese floor covering scientifically aligned with spinal health through its firm, even support. We designed a bedroom installation that balances therapeutic function with warm, inviting aesthetics.
Therapeutic floor sleeping
Tatami mats provide the firm, even surface that supports natural spinal alignment, a practice long used in Japan to alleviate back discomfort and improve sleep quality.
Multifunctional family space
The tatami installation creates a low-profile, versatile zone that doubles as a lounging area, a natural gathering spot for Alvin and his family beyond sleeping hours.
Layout Plan
Hand-woven natural Igusa grass, custom-fitted to the bedroom

Brick-bond mat arrangement
The five mats are laid in a classic brick-bond pattern, two portrait mats anchoring the left wall and three landscape mats filling the right section. This staggered formation distributes weight evenly and minimises joint stress, ensuring the sleeping surface remains flat and supportive over time.
Positioned against the window wall
The tatami zone is set flush against the window wall, allowing natural light and airflow from the timber-blind window to pass over the sleeping surface. This placement encourages the natural breathability of the Igusa grass and helps regulate temperature during sleep — a key factor in Alvin's recovery goals.
