Client wanted to furnish their living room, they sought something beyond the conventional sofa set, a solution that would maximize their space with practical lifestyle needs.
After researching alternatives and visiting our showroom, they were drawn to the tatami concept for its versatility and space efficiency. They envisioned a space that could seamlessly transform from casual guest seating to an immersive movie theater experience with their projector setup, and even serve as comfortable sleeping quarters for overnight visitors.
Our Approach
The living room was transformed from a potentially static area with a sofa into a dynamic, adaptable social canvas.
Design Strategy
We designed a tatami platform with integrated custom bench seating featuring display storage underneath. The tatami mats provide comfortable floor seating and sleeping surfaces, while supporting their "friends table" concept for hosting gatherings and a dedicated lounging area for movie viewing with their projector setup.
Collaboration
We worked closely with the client to understand their floor-sitting lifestyle preferences and hosting needs. Since they naturally gravitated toward sitting on the floor anyway, the tatami concept was the perfect fit, more practical for their space and habits. We ensured the design would accommodate their projector setup with optimal viewing angles from both floor and bench positions.
Cultural Inspiration
Inspired by their travels and appreciation for Japanese aesthetics, the design captures the essence of flexible, multi-functional living spaces. The absence of a television in favor of a projector system creates an uncluttered, intentional environment. Cozy elements like pillows and blankets enhance the lounging atmosphere, while the surrounding platform provides additional seating and practical storage, embodying the Japanese principle of harmonious, purposeful design
