Why She Chose Tatami
Annette wanted to create a tea room that felt authentic, calming, and culturally immersive, rather than a conventional commercial seating area. Because the space was part of a modern tea shop, the solution also had to feel refined, intentional, and suitable for a customer-facing environment.

Our Approach
We proposed a recessed Tatami installation using a 7 Full and 1 Half Tatami configuration.
Design Strategy
Our concept was to create a fully integrated Japanese-inspired tea room using natural Igusa Tatami. A recessed installation was chosen so the Tatami would feel like part of the room itself, rather than a loose flooring addition. The 7 Full and 1 Half Tatami layout was carefully planned to create a balanced and harmonious flow throughout the space. This helped the tea room feel calm, grounded, and distinct from the rest of the commercial environment.
End Result
The completed tea room featured a recessed 7 Full and 1 Half natural Igusa Tatami configuration. The final space successfully captured the tranquill feeling of a traditional Japanese tea setting while blending into the modern tea shop. It’s the kind of space that feels welcoming the moment you step in, which was exactly what Annette wanted for her tea room.
