How do you clean the Shikibuton?

Futon Insert Maintenance

Sunning: Sun your futon once a month to keep it plump and maintain hygiene.
Refreshing: After sunning, spray our Hinoki Mist lightly to freshen the insert. Please ensure you apply only a light mist; do not spray enough to make the cotton wet.
Cleaning: The insert is for dry cleaning only. You may send it for professional dry cleaning once or twice a year. Do not hand wash or machine wash the insert.

Cover Care

Preparation: Always turn covers inside out and place them into a laundry net before washing to protect the fabric design.
Color Check: Before machine washing, hand wash a small area first to check for potential color bleeding.
Temperature: Use a maximum water temperature of 20 to 30 degrees Celsius for all washes.

Can I stack two Shikibutons together?

You may wish to do that if you would like the extra height.

Does the Shikibuton come with a blanket?

The Kakebuton (blanket) is sold separately.

Do I have to sundry the Shikibuton everyday?

Sun your futon once a month to keep it plump and maintain hygiene.

Does the Shikibuton flatten overtime?

As with any futon that is made with cotton, with usage overtime, it will flatten from your body weight but that is not to say that it cannot be used. The futon is usable even if there is a slight compression.

Will I feel warm sleeping on the Shikibuton?

Our Shikiibuton is made with 100% Pure Cotton. Pure Cotton characteristics are known to be cool in warm weather and warm in cooler weather. The futons at Tatami Shop are Japanese Summer Shikibutons which are more well suited for hot and humid weather. For a cooling effect when sleeping, you may also wish to consider our Tatami collection which regulates temperature naturally.

Can the Shikibuton be placed directly on the floor?

You can sleep directly on the floor with a Shikibuton without Tatami at the bottom, though regular upkeeping is important to prevent moisture build-up and mold. We encourage our clients to come down to our showroom in Singapore to try it first (if possible), as every client has their own personal preferences.

Do you only carry one futon type?

We only carry the Japanese summer futon as we have found that this is best suited for Singapore's hot & humid weather. The other versions of the Japanese futons are too thick and heavy for daily use in our weather conditions.

Breathable Comfort

First came across this tatami bed one year gap when visiting a friend’s house. Like the idea of sleeping on the platform with tatami and futon. It provides good and firm support to our back. In the afternoon, I like to sleep on the tatami as it’s very cooling. At night, with the futon, it’s soft and comfortable. I like the smell of the tatami too, it’s soothing and feel so “close” to the nature. Overall, I would recommend this - especially those who need good back support.

I was searching for Japanese futon with the intention to switch my current bed to floor bedding and came across the Tatami Shop. I enquired the Shikibuton that they carry and the staff was really nice and friendly in explaining to me. Not long later I booked an appointment to go down to try out their mattress. The Tatami Mattress with the Shikibuton was really nice to sleep on and Li Zhen also helped me to do some calculations to see what would be the most ideal size I could get. I purchased a Tatami Mattress and a Shikibuton to try it out first before committing to replace my current bed. Service was really good and I also brought in the Tatami 9-in-1 Sofa Bed which I got second hand and they were happy to do the cleaning for me. Great service and would really recommend! I’m enjoying my Tatami Mattress now while waiting for my Shikibuton sheets to be dried to try it out for my night sleep!
