Why They Chose Tatami
Rodney chose Tatami for his home design because he wanted to recreate the familiarity of his past life in Japan, specifically seeking the cooling effect of the natural Igusa grass and the versatile, comfortable lounging it provides for his family.
Key Challenges & Needs
He needed to maximize the limited square footage of his studio condo by creating a distinct, versatile zone.
The living area needed to perform triple duty: serving as his primary daily relaxation space, a social area for hosting friends, and a private bedroom for overnight guests.
Using conventional furniture (like a modern sofa bed) would consume permanent floor space, offer limited storage, and fail to create a sense of separation or defined purpose.

Design Strategy
We focused on creating spatial fluidity by integrating custom modular mats into Rodney's open-plan layout. We selected premium Igusa grass to provide the specific natural cooling and fragrance he associated with Japan. This approach turned the floor into a multifunctional Zen zone that balances modern durability with traditional comfort. By tailoring the mats to fit the existing architecture, we seamlessly blended his nostalgic needs with the home’s contemporary style.
Cultural Inspiration
The cultural integration in Rodney's studio primarily centers on achieving a minimalist, intentional living aesthetic through architectural zoning. The custom, full-platform Tatami solution acts as a permanent, built-in feature that visually defines a clear, versatile zone within the open-plan apartment. This structure promotes a decluttered environment by integrating six large, concealed storage compartments beneath the mats, honoring the principle of functional simplicity. The seamless Tatami surface creates a low-profile focal point for relaxing and sleeping, aligning with floor-based living traditions. This transformation delivered an organized, adaptable space that embodies a thoughtful, contemporary approach to Japanese-inspired design.

Raised Platform Structure with Hidden Storage Compartments
The platform was engineered with six large, individual, top-access doors beneath the Tatami Mats. This design provided direct access to generous compartments, massively increasing and concealing storage to solve Rodney’s clutter and storage needs.
