  • The apartment was small, requiring every inch of the living area to serve multiple functions without feeling cramped.
  • Jennifer needed a discreet way to store toys, bedding, and other items used when her grandchildren visited, keeping the living area tidy and hazard‑free.
  • The space had to be comfortable for both an elderly resident and young children; comfortable enough for sleeping on the floor, yet firm and supportive for daily sitting.

The homeowner was already familiar with Tatami Shop, having purchased from our previous showroom location. That previous positive experience gave her confidence in the durability, authentic feel, and long‑term value of our mats. For this project, she valued that Tatami offered a naturally comfortable surface for her grandchildren to sleep on during visits, while also providing a clean, finished look over the storage platform. The ability to combine a minimalistic, multipurpose living area with hidden storage made our solution the clear choice over conventional sofas or loose rugs.

Our Approach

We supplied high‑quality, custom‑made Tatami Mats to fit perfectly into the client’s newly built wooden platform.



Design Strategy


The platform was designed with pull-out compartments on it. This gave the homeowner easy access to store grandchildren’s items, extra bedding, and other household essentials, all hidden from view.

By topping the platform with authentic Tatami Mats, the area became a unified, firm, and inviting surface suitable for sitting, playing, napping, or hosting overnight stays. The modular nature of the mats also allowed for easy movement and maintenance.

Craftsmanship & Installation


While we did not construct the platform ourselves, our involvement went beyond a simple product sale. We worked closely with the client and her contractor by providing clear specifications on mat dimensions, recommended Tatami density for comfortable seating, and advice on the platform cavities to ensure sufficient allowance for the Tatami Mats to fit in. This collaborative approach ensured that the carpentry work and the final Tatami installation were perfectly aligned, resulting in a safe, durable, and visually cohesive finish.
