A Simple Evening Wind-Down Routine for a More Relaxing Bedtime

You know that feeling when it's already 11 pm, but somehow you're still scrolling through your phone, watching one more video, or thinking about everything you need to get done tomorrow?

The day is technically over, but your mind hasn't quite got the memo.

Sometimes, what we need isn't another complicated bedtime routine. It's simply a little time and space to slow down. And with December approaching, now might be a good time to make that part of your evening.

Why the Last Hour Before Bed Matters

Our evenings don't always have a clear finish line. We go from answering messages and finishing work to watching videos, checking tomorrow's plans, and eventually crawling into bed.

A consistent evening wind-down routine gives us a chance to make that transition more gradually.

Rather than jumping straight from a busy day into bedtime, spending around 30 to 60 minutes on quieter activities can help establish a familiar signal that it's time to slow down. The key is consistency, not perfection.

Create a Little Corner to Call Your Own

Here's an idea: instead of treating your bedtime routine as a list of things to remember, give it a place in your home.

It doesn't need to be an entire room or a beautifully decorated meditation space. A quiet corner with a comfortable floor surface, a warm lamp, a cushion and perhaps a small side table is more than enough.

The idea is to have somewhere you can return to each evening, away from your usual work setup and everyday distractions.

A little inspiration from Wabi-Sabi at Home: a space doesn't have to look perfect to feel inviting. Sometimes, it's the simple, lived-in corners that make a home feel like home.

A Simple 60-Minute Evening Wind-Down Routine

You don't need to fill every minute. Start with a few familiar activities and keep them in roughly the same order each night.

First 5 minutes: Dim the lights and put your phone away.

Switch off the brighter overhead lights and leave a warm, softer lamp on. Put your phone on charge somewhere out of reach. No last-minute emails, no endless scrolling, and definitely no checking that one notification.

Next 10 minutes: Make yourself a warm drink.

Prepare a cup of caffeine-free tea or another comforting drink. Take your time with it. Let this be the moment you stop thinking about work and start thinking about yourself.

Next 15 minutes: Read or stretch.

Pick up a physical book, flip through a magazine, or try a few gentle stretches. There's no need to squeeze in a full workout. Keep things easy and enjoyable.

Final 30 minutes: Settle into some quiet floor rest.

Move to your little corner and get comfortable. Sit on a Tatami Meditation Cushion or use a Tatami Pillow for a little support. If you prefer, stretch out on the floor and rest your head on a cushion for a few quiet minutes.

You could simply sit, breathe, listen to some soft music, or enjoy a moment without having to do anything in particular.

Make It a Little Ritual Worth Returning To

The beauty of an evening wind-down routine is that it doesn't need to change every night.

When you repeat the same simple sequence, your corner gradually becomes a familiar part of your day. The lamp, the book, the warm drink and the few minutes of floor rest all become little reminders that it's time to leave the day's busyness behind.

And with December just around the corner, perhaps this is one little habit worth building before the festive rush begins.

After all, there's no need to wait until the year gets quieter to make a little room for rest.
