Wellness spaces, woven by hand

For over 26 years, we've been crafting natural tatami for the places people go to rest, sit, and breathe. Long before wellness became an industry. Studios, temples, offices, and events across Singapore and beyond.

WHAT IS TATAMI

First, the material

Tatami is the traditional Japanese floor covering, woven from igusa, a rush grass grown in the fields of Kumamoto, Kyushu. For centuries it has been the surface on which people in Japan sat, slept, practised, and gathered.

The first thing most people notice is the scent. Igusa carries a faint, earthy sweetness that settles a room the moment you walk in. The second is the feel underfoot: firm enough to support you, soft enough to sit on for an hour.

It breathes, regulates temperature naturally, and is woven entirely by hand by traditional artisans. In a room full of synthetic surfaces, it is often the only living material on the floor.

THE RARITY OF TRUE IGUSA

A Touch of Premium Luxury

It's important to understand a key aspect of genuine Igusa grass: it is not infinitely abundant. High-quality Igusa, the kind used by Tatami Shop, is a precious resource. This scarcity, combined with the meticulous hand-crafting process, contributes significantly to the premium, luxurious feel of these Tatami mats. It’s more than just a floor; it's an acquisition of tradition and a natural luxury that is becoming increasingly rare, truly elevating any space beyond what typical flooring offers.

Applications

One material, many practices

We've learned not to tell people how to use tatami. Every space finds its own way. These are some of the places ours has ended up:

Meditation and sound baths

Cushions and mats that hold a seated posture without strain.

Talks and workshops

Comfortable floor seating for groups, no ankles going numb.

Events and pop-ups

A grounding setting that guests remember.

Studio rest corners

A quiet zone for clients before or after practice.

Workplace recovery zones

Somewhere for teams to actually step away.

Our favourite uses came from customers, not us.

Honest Fit

Where tatami belongs, and where it doesn't

Natural materials have a nature. We'd rather you know it upfront.

Wonderful for

Seated and lying practices. Meditation, breathwork, sound baths. Talks, gatherings, and rest, anywhere dry, calm, and grounded.

Not built for

Moisture. Hot yoga, sweat-heavy sessions, humid or wet areas. Igusa is a living material, and water is the one thing it won't forgive.

Practicality

A sanctuary that doesn't ask for a renovation

Set up in under two hours

Our pieces work like furniture, not construction. No drilling, no dust, no downtime.

Lays over your existing floor

Carpet, tile, or timber. Tatami sits directly on top of what's already there.

Moves when you do

Reconfigure a corner or relocate entirely. Every piece picks up and rearranges.

Tell us what you're building

A studio, a corner, an event, an idea that's still forming. We're happy to think it through with you. Share a little about your space and we'll come back with something considered, not a canned quote.

Thank you for your interest!

Our team will message you back as soon as possible.
